In 2010 while on a trip to New Zealand to visit his daughter, Mike was introduced to the iconic New Zealand pie by his Kiwi son-in-law Jonny. On settling in Newcastle with his Geordie wife Jonny began craving the hot, savoury boost that only a New Zealand pie can bring. Joining forces with his foodie father-in-law, they created some delicious New Zealand inspired filling recipes and approached a local Master Baker with their ideas. After months of fine tuning, the first New Zealand Gourmet Pies were produced. They were shared down at Jonny’s local rugby club and left the members begging for more. The New Zealand Gourmet Pie Company was born.
In August 2011, we finally began to sell our Gourmet pies in commercial volumes through supplying retailers (pubs, clubs, and delis) and direct to the consumer at events, markets and festivals as well as through an on-line shop on the website here
By early 2013, NZGP had used 3 different contract bakers and we felt a strong desire to have our wholly-owned facility to allow us control over product quality, customer service and new product development. When we became aware of the chance to acquire the assets of Geordie Bakers Ltd, a well established craft bakery in Newcastle, we expressed our interest and were favoured. We acquired the assets in May 2013 and by September that year we had transferred all pie production to Geordie Bakers, launched a range of traditional artisan breads and integrated the activities in both operations under one roof. Today we supply a full range of delicious gourmet pies, daily bread, artisan bread, cakes and sweet treats.
